0 Foreword

This course is also a contribution to the special anniversary year 2001 of the Roman Catholic social teaching, also named christian society teaching. Common things with the corresponding remarks in the Protestant area get a greater degree. This is found more and more in the course, too.

In the year 2001 the first social encyclical "Rerum novelty rum" will get 110, "Quadragesimo anno" 70, "Mater et magistra" 40, "Octogesima adveniens" 30, "Laborem exercens" 20 and "Centesimus annus" 10 years old.

This and the conviction that concepts about the social teaching have to be discussed newly, just now at the beginning of the new century, have brought the development of this course.

1 Targets and target groups

This course wants to offer a first introduction to the Roman Catholic social teaching. It is directed to all, who are interested, to the cooperating persons of the municipalities and social associations, primarily to the Roman Catholic employee movement as well. It wants all these to become acquainted with the Roman Catholic social teaching, and that all these are able to discuss and to act still better by this knowledge. The course starts from the assumption, that all who are involved have always acted according to the social teaching. The life and experience horizon of the involved persons is part of this course.

2 About understanding the social teaching

Social teaching is no completed system of theorems, stylized perhaps also so highly that it only can be understood of experts. It is an open system that produces new challenges again and again. It is no system either, where only the teaching profession or professors are able to play a part, many persons cooperate, primarily these, who want to realize it in the practice. "The social teaching of the church doesn’t present an own system, but it allows to recognize how the existing systems correspondend to the demands for human dignity or not, seen by the eyes of statements of principles (Libertas conscientiae 74)".

Social teachings are done by the popes, the bishops and by conferences of bishops, the epistemology and the universities for applied science, but primelary by the speeches and the actions of socially enganged christians.

Social teaching is part of a critical theory, so my opinion. Concrete situations and projects, that are to be developed have to be discussed, in the view of its understanding of human dignity and justice. It is no science, that only states the present, but it wants to show how things have to look like. So it’s oriented to actions. It will create critical guidelines about social actings and further development of social structures.

It is also able to stand up for a better possibility of justice and human dignity, by a social discussion in a special way. So it is also an old request to have an effect on the Roman Catholic social teaching about changing the attitudes and changing the structures according their target ideas.

The reader gets a first insight about the social teaching for example in the exercise-book: Practical social teaching, topic exercise-books municipality work 11, The way of the church is human, Aachen 1992.

3 Construction

Four topics (units) shall be worked out.

  1. The hope about justice
  2. History of the Roman Catholic social teaching
  3. Approaches of the social teaching
  4. Ways to practice today

Normally the handling is proceeded by the method "Notice - Judge – Act". This means, at the beginning there is an analysis of the situation, then follows an ethical judgement, and finally there are tips about necessary steps to change the situation.

4 Didactics and methodology

The course is a didactically multi media course. Beside the original text search processes in the internet and texts of books or if necessary other media are handled. Questions shall help to preparate and the studying results can be recorded.

When a final certificate is wanted, these would have to be sent in. For this a final work would have to be done as well.

Many original texts are brought in. These convey an immediate impression of social teaching.

5 Forms of execution and exam

5.1 Individual work

The course can be done by individual work. It is studied privately and corresponding performances are done to get a final certificate.

These studies always should be started by considerations, to find a personal entry to the text.

5.2 Weekend and private studies

Introduction about weekends and private studies: During one weekend, or at one or more fulltime workshops one letter is introduced. The costs of this workshop, which are mostly the expenses of the corresponded house, have to be added to the charge, that is listed by point 9.
A final examination is possible as well, when all units are done.

A study weekend could look like this:

Friday

19.30 Introduction

Saturday

09.00 -- 12.00 1st workshop: (Work for chapter 1-2)

15.00 -- 18.00 2nd workshop: (Work for chapter 3-4)

Sunday

08.00 Service

09.15 Final discussion workshop (Summarizing and representation of chapter 5)

Suggestions about the realization

  • Various methods are recommended and results from the local possibilities.
  • A possible construction of the work units about the 1st unit could be done by several chapters.
  • The whole text should be read privately before the conversation, if possible.
  • The workshop (plenum) could start with a round table conversation about the question to think about.
  • In the following teamwork by three groups about "Notice – Judge – Act".
  • Introduce the results of each workshop (plenum) by foils.
  • Final discussion.

5.3 Studies in local or regional working groups with multipliers

The studies in local or regional working groups with multipliers in central measures is prepared by central actions. Per one letter 3 till 5 conversation evenings are carried out.

If necessary the expenses of conversation management (local charges) have to be added to the charge, that is listed by point 9.

Contacts to the local education system are useful here.

The final examination is possible here as well.

4 till 6 evenings are possible:

1st evening Introduction

2. - 5th evening One chapter (of 2 – 4) each evening

6th Final

The following is possible, too:

To handle the 1st evening together with the 2nd, and to handle the 6th together with the 5th , then there would be only four evenings.

The conversation could run as follows:

One chapter per evening (The questions about this result in the texts and are listed at the end of each chapter)

It is useful to have read the text at home before

Introducing conversation may be with the question to think about if necessary

There are 9 questions about each chapter:

3 about Notice

3 about Judge

3 about Act

The first question finds always a personal entry to the text, the two others have to be answered by the text.

This can be carried out by three groups, every group has to read about 8 sides and to carry out two questions. So the groups have more time to discuss. The carrying out can be done by one or two persons in little conversation circles as well. The results should be written and be projected by foil, if possible.

After this a round table conversation shall run the answers of the questions (with projection by foil, if possible)

Carry out still unanswered questions

Another method could be, to read the text at home, to note questions and to discuss these questions with each other.

  1. Finalexam (optional)
  2. A final examination can be done, it isn't specified. The final examination runs by the written answers of the questions at the end of all four coursesections. In addition, there is to carry out a work with about 5 sides about a topic that is suggested (three suggestions). When this is done, the participants get a certificate from the educationsystem of the KAB diocese Limburg, this can be done by the agreement of the author and those who support as well, if the standard of other KAB educationsystems is kept.

  3. Chronological way

The course lasts, starting with the 1.1.2001, two years and is divided up in four sections.

8 Those who support

Those who support are the educationsystem of the diocese of the KAB in the diocese Limburg, the regards content responsibility has Prof. Dr. Ernst Leuninger.
